TOUR SANCTUARY GARDEN TO MACHUPICCHU

Add to my wishlist See my wishlist

The area of the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu known as the Sanctuary Garden is private property containing archeological sites including store houses, irrigation canals, farming terraces, shrines, towers, reservoirs, tunnels and more, including part of the Inca trail network. Not many agencies are permitted to operate within the Sanctuary Garden, and Pirwa Travel´s route is exclusive!
This uncommon experience will take you through sierra and lowland tropical rainforest to the jungle of Machu Picchu. Here, in an area bordered by sacred peaks, you´ll find mysterious Inca ruins long-settled into their lush surroundings. In this trek through time you´ll come to know the mystery, nature and history of the Andes as you journey to the great lost city of Machu Picchu.

DAY 01: PISCACUCHO – SALAPUNKU – Q´ANABAMBA – Q´ENTE

You`ll be picked up at your hotel after breakfast and we`ll travel by bus to Piscacucho (2720 meters above sea level), which is located at Km 82 along the railway line that leads to Machu Picchu. Here the trek begins, following the right bank of the Urubamba River downstream to the ruins of Salapunku "Reception Gate" (2623m), which guarded the entrance to the Sacred Valley. Its walls of massive stone resemble those of another famous fort, Sacsayhuamán.
Continuing on, the next stop will be the enclosures of Q´anabamba, "Green Meadow". We´ll also visit Q´oriwayrachina, "Where the Wind Refines Gold" (2,520m). Here, upon a massive rock extending horizontally into the Vilcanota River and rising to a great height, the remains of a circular tower and stone stair give clues to the site´s possible use as a communication center. We will cross the river by suspension bridge, eventually arriving at our campsite in Q´ente, where we´ll eat lunch and rest for a while. We´ll have traveled around 7km in a period of about 4 hours and a light to moderate degree of difficulty.
After our rest we will walk along the left side of the river opposite its course, crossing the Cusichaca River and entering the area of the community of Chamana (Shaman`s Land). We`ll ascend to an original Inca trail, following this for a 200m stretch to Willkaraqay, "Sacred Storehouse" (2790m) in Cusicacha Valley, a site which acted as a rest stop and trading center during Inca times. Its more than 30 rooms display a unique geometry and a semicircular watch tower with a view over the western side of the valley. The entire complex, believed to have been a military base, is enclosed by an egg-shaped curved wall.
We`ll descend to Patallaqta, "Village in the Heights", which is also known as Q'entemarka "Place of the Hummingbird", a formidable complex with more than 100 buildings organized into blocks with streets and alleys.
Continuing along the eastern strip of Patallaqta, we´ll head in the direction of our final stop, the Inca shrine of Pulpitutyoq (2500m), which we´ll enter through a round stair. After touring this site we`ll return to Qente, having traveled around 4.5km in a space of 4 hours. The degree of difficulty is slight, with a short arduous stretch which is the ascent to Willka Rakay. We`ll have dinner and rest at the campsite.

DAY 02: MACHUQ´ENTE – WAYNAQ´ENTE

After a refreshing breakfast, we´ll hike along the left side of the river. Today´s route will have a strikingly abundant amount of plant and wildlife. We`ll pass Machuq´ente, "Old Hummingbird", along the way, extensive Andean terraces laid out in the shape of a hummingbird. 2 ½ km from Machuq´ente, in the direction of the Vilcanota riverbank, is Waynaq´ente, "Young Hummingbird" (2550m), one of the most beautiful archeological complexes in the Garden Sanctuary. The master stonework, including a finely carved double gate, suggests that the rooms here had a ceremonial purpose. In its heyday, it was connected by a well-equipped Inca trail complete with drains and walls for defense. We will return to the Q´ente camp for an appetizing lunch, having walked about 4km over a 4 hour period. The grade of difficulty until Waynaq´ente is high, with a 300m ascent, but from there the trail levels and the degree of difficulty is light. After lunch you`ll have the afternoon free to enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings. We`ll have dinner and spend the night in the camp.

DAY 03: Q`ENTE – MACHU PICCHU – CUSCO

We`ll have breakfast very early before embarking on the train which will take us to Machu Picchu Pueblo (known colloquially as Aguas Calientes). This is the last stop on the train, so from here we`ll need to switch to bus for the final part of the ascent to the Lost City of the Incas, Machu Picchu Archeological Complex. We´ll have a guided tour of the famous and mysterious ancient citadel. Your guide will acquaint you with key sights such as the main plaza, the circular tower, the cemeteries, the Temple of the Three Windows, and the royal rooms. The highlight is the shrine to the sun god, Intihuatana, the Sacred Solar Clock which aligns with the two equinoxes and with the winter solstice. After the guided tour you´ll have time to explore the ruins by yourself and take photos. We´ll return to Aguas Calientes for lunch before boarding the train to return to Cusco and your respective hotels.
