This tour includes all the thrill that off-roading and sandboarding offer as well as visits to sites thousands of years old, the religious center of Cahuachi, a sacred city and pilgrimage site, and the Estaqueria, which offers a vital clue to the creation of the famous Nazca mummies. Both are remnants of the mysterious Nazca Civilization which left their mark across the desert.
Those preferring a morning tour will be picked up at their hotel in Nazca at 7am, those preferring an afternoon tour will be picked up at 1pm. Climbing aboard our dune buggy vehicle (4WD), we'll set off on an exciting off-roading adventure on the left bank of the Nazca Valley, stopping in Cahuachi Ceremonial Center. We'll visit the the temple pyramids of the city center, walking along the terraced streets and squares. Our guide will teach us about the history and significance of the impossing great temple, staggered temple and ceremonial plazas- the center of the religious world of the an civilization which dominated this area thousands of years ago, leaving famous marks upon the desert floor, and disappeared into mystery.
From there our trip through the Cahuachi Valley continues as we pass through the farming village of Tambo de Perro en route to the Usaca valley.
where the Nazca and Pajonal River unite, is surrounded by sand dunes perfect for sandboarding. The buggy will take care of the uphill journey- the boards will handle the adrenaline-filled descent! Here in the coastal desert we'll hit the 'slopes' for a couple of hours before beginning our return to Nazca. En route we'll stop in at the nearby 2000 year old site of Estaqueria, 'Place of the Stakes', whose rows of huarango log pillars may provide clues as to how bodies such as the mummies recovered from Cahuachi were prepared, as experts theorize that here the bodies of deceased tribal members were staked out to dry.
You will be dropped off at your hotel in Nazca around midday, the trip having a duration of 5 hours.
The 4th annual International Culinary Fair of Lima, Mistura 2011, is taking place right now at Parque de la Exposición in the center of Lima as foodies from around the world gather for good times and good food. The event will be continuing through to the 18th. Throughout the year Peru has been combed for vendors and chefs of quality and there are more than 1800 products available at the market. One of the big themes of this year's event is "fruits of the Amazon", although you'll find products native to all regions of the country.
Sacred Mt Pachatusan, whose name is quechua for "He Who Sustains the Earth", has the honor of being a preferred site for traditional pre-Columbian rites- such as offerings to the Apu (Mountain Deity) or Pachamama (Earth Mother), purifications, and Ayahuasca ceremonies- as well as the site of one of Peru's largest pilgrimages, the Lord of Huanca.
Sanctuary Garden is an area of privately-owned property within the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu zone. It boasts recently discovered archeological sites including Inca terraces, irrigation canals, shrines, storehouses, towers, tunnels, and more, in an area that still has not been fully explored. Part of the Inca Trail Network crosses this area as well.
