Experience two unmissable Inca sites in the Sacred Valley of the Incas during this excursion to the concentric terraces of the Agricultural Laboratory of Moray, an engineering wonder replicating various distinct microclimates, and the thousands of shining staggered salt pools of Maras, still in use today by the community of Maras.
You´ll be picked up at your hotel at 8:30am and head through the Urubamba River Valley by bus en route to Moray (3200m). Along the way we´ll pass scenic subsistence crops such as corn and oca fields before entering Moray by dirt road. The Inca Agricultural laboratory of Moray comprises a set of circular concentric terraces possessing various microclimates, with each terrace representing a difference of about 1000m of altitude under normal farming conditions. We´ll spend an hour in this site examining its construction, design, and uses before sitting down to a box lunch.
Afterwards, we´ll continue to the Maras Salt Mines for a sight you won´t see anywhere else: thousands of small pools constructed by the Inca in staggered terraces along the hillside, through which a small saltwater stream from the interior of Mt Qaqawiñay is channeled. Evaporating water leaves behind salt which the families of Maras, each entitled to a pool, ready to Peruvian and international consumption. We´ll spend an hour exploring this visually stunning site, where the sun playing off the different salt levels creates a range of tones and textures, returning to Cusco by bus around midday.

Sacred Mt Pachatusan, whose name is quechua for "He Who Sustains the Earth", has the honor of being a preferred site for traditional pre-Columbian rites- such as offerings to the Apu (Mountain Deity) or Pachamama (Earth Mother), purifications, and Ayahuasca ceremonies- as well as the site of one of Peru's largest pilgrimages, the Lord of Huanca.
