Grab an ice axe and come conquer the three peaks of Arequipa´s Snowy Chachani (Skirt) Volcano with us! Don´t attempt this tour until you´ve allowed for acclimatization, but once you´re ready to tackle the mountain, it will be an accomplishment and an adventure that you´ll never forget. Your reward: a panorama unfolding from the summit of the surrounding snowy peaks, volcano, and the White City of Arequipa along with its scenic countryside.
At 8:30am, we´ll set off from the city of Arequipa in a 4x4, the only vehicle capable of reaching the volcano. We´ll arrive at our starting point (5,000m) after about 2½ hours and from there will climb 300m to the site where we´ll set up our base camp. We´ll walk around the base camp and to the camp above in order to accustom ourselves to the altitude.
(Chachani doesn´t have permanent ice caps or glaciers, and the amount of ice and snow has been decreasing, so during certain months you may not need to use the crampons and the ice axe for Day 2´s climb.)
We´ll rise early this day, at 2:30am, to some hot coca tea and a filling breakfast. Leaving the equipment at base camp, we´ll grab our day packs and begin the ascent to the first peak, the ice and snow-covered Angel Peak (5,825m), from where you´ll be able to overlook the city of Arequipa. From there, we´ll cross another snowy stretch, continuing our climb in a zigzag manner along the south face of Fatima to its peak (5900m). It is here that our final goal will come into view as we look upon the final peak. After Fatima we approach the final stretch, ascending 5-6 hrs to the summit of Chachani (6080m).
From here the region of Arequipa will open around us in a full panorama. You´ll see the snow-capped mountains of Coropuna, Hualca Hualca, Sabancaya and Ubinas, Misti Volcano, Ubinas, the White City of Arequipa, and the surrounding countryside.
All in all, the ascent from base camp to the top of the Chachani Volcano will have taken us from 6-9 hours depending on our speed, but we´ll be able to descend back to base camp in only 2-3 hours. After packing up camp we´ll go down to where our transport waits to take us back to the city of Arequipa, where we´ll arrive around 2:00-3:00pm.

The event will be continuing through to the 18th. Throughout the year Peru has been combed for vendors and chefs of quality and there are more than 1800 products available at the market. One of the big themes of this year's event is "fruits of the Amazon", although you'll find products native to all regions of the country.
Sacred Mt Pachatusan, whose name is quechua for "He Who Sustains the Earth", has the honor of being a preferred site for traditional pre-Columbian rites- such as offerings to the Apu (Mountain Deity) or Pachamama (Earth Mother), purifications, and Ayahuasca ceremonies- as well as the site of one of Peru's largest pilgrimages, the Lord of Huanca.
