Warachikuy3

The end of the college means the beginning of something new. Here in Cusco is a college, which celebrates games with their male graduates to transfer them to adulthood. It is a tradition which is only celebrated in recent years. Since the year 2,000 the male graduates have to pass some tests to become real men. Once they passed these they are receiving the right to marry, to own their own land, to start their own family etc.

You will be able to watch the games of Warachikuy every year on the third Sunday in September, 19 September this year, at the archaeological complex of Sacsayhuamán.

The today rather touristic Fiesta de Warachikuy once was taken very serious in the ancient times. It still gives you a good idea and the possibility to travel back in time and imagine how the Incas once had celebrated the new men.

Coming to Peru makes you realize at some point that the Peruvians are a folk which enjoys to celebrate and has fiestas all year round. Some of these are regional others are celebrated in the entire country. One of the important fiestas is the Pacha Mama Raymi, the Fiesta in honor of Mother Earth. This is a fiesta, held at the 1 August, also indicating the beginning of the Andean New Year.

A traditional ceremony is held especially in the Andean regions of Peru. The people come together to make offers to the Apu, the spirits of their ancestors, which they believe are dwelling in the mountains. The people make offers to the Apu, the spirits of their ancestors, these can include the sacred coca leafs, unwrought silver, chicha, wine and huayruro (seeds from the jungle). These serve to mediate between the inner world (the Apu and the Pacha Mama) and the outer world (the man). They believe to secure a good harvest for the coming year with these ceremonies. You will be able to participate in these ceremonies in various places.

Peru is a country with a great diversity not just because of the fact of being divided in three different nature zones, the jungle, the coast and the high land of the Andes. It is a country where tradition and modernity are clashing, but are also integrated with each other in the everyday life. Since the influence of the modern world did not stop at the borders, Peruvians, just as in many other countries, especially of the westernized world, accustomed to the fast food world. Less people are coming home at lunch time to cook with the rest of the family, the habit of eating out in restaurants is one which is getting more and more participants in these days.

This brings the tradition of cooking local recipes in a great danger. To not let that happen a well known company created LA DIA DE LA COMIDA PERUANA (the day of the Peruvian food). In the first place this day was created for the Peruvians to come together with the entire family to cook Peruvian dishes and to protect the traditional recipes, to not loose them in the future. During this day you will be able to have a try of different Peruvian dishes. You will find the locals providing you with their dishes in different plazas all over the cities in the entire country.

Since this day only exists since 2007 you will have more luck of a culinary journey in bigger cities, such as Lima, Cusco or Puno. Dive into this culinary adventure with us! Stay in one of our Pirwa Hostels in Lima, Nazca, Puno, Cusco or Aguas Calientes.
