Paucartambo is a small town, about 100 km in the north east of Cusco, situated in about 3,000 meters. Distinctive for this little town are the small houses with its colorful balconies made out of wood. In the times of the Incas this place was an important connection along the Inca Trails having been the access to the east.
Today it is famous for its Fiesta de la Virgen del Carmen. It is devoted to the Virgen del Carmen, a religious festival. Every year are coming thousands of Peruvians and some international tourists to participate in the Festival. It is a 3 day festival taken place around the 16th June. This year it will last from the 14th to the 16th of June. You will be able to see a lot of traditional dances, whereas the most famous one is the Saqras, dance of the devil, led by the devil and followed by his slaves. It is also a festival in memory of the slavery in the ancient times. Visiting Paucartambo in these days means to be able to participate in a very colorful and cheerful festival with the locals.
Travelling to Paucartambo in these days should also include a visit of the Three Crosses, just up in the mountains in the North. Here you will be able to enjoy a magical natural happening. The only bad thing about it might be, that you will have to get up really early in the morning to enjoy one of the most beautiful sunrises in the world. The sun will slowly break through the clouds above the Manu National Park.
